Nihilistic Violent Extremism 201: What Justice Professionals Need to Know
Technological advances in online spaces have heralded an unprecedented rate of change for violent extremism, extreme violence, and other associated forms of criminality. This advanced training builds on the NVE 101 training by examining the rise of nihilistic violent extremism (itself a highly contested term) to explore how coercive online communities embrace, normalize, and celebrate multiple, overlapping harms both within and outside these online spaces. Despite the diversity and hybrid nature associated with these communities, they share several critical features including the systematic targeting of children and vulnerable youth. Participants will learn about the key social and psychological qualities of such communities, including extensive detail on the tactics, techniques and procedures deployed. Implications and practical guidance for investigators will be provided.
