Targeted Violence in Public Settings
Project Lead: Dr. James Densley and Dr. Jillian Peterson, Violence Prevention Project Research Center
Status: In Progress
This project examines patterns of targeted violence across diverse public settings, including medical facilities, houses of worship, colleges and universities, and other mass public locations. Drawing on homicide and mass shooting databases, each paper analyzes incident characteristics, victim and perpetrator profiles, and contextual factors such as motives, access dynamics, and warning behaviors. Together, the series of brief, data-driven reports and their corresponding podcasts translate these findings into tailored, setting-specific recommendations to improve threat assessment, prevention strategies, and policy and practice for institutions and local jurisdictions.
